the Apex

shaper breakdown

An all-around high performance shortboard; a conglomeration of design aspects from the Blackbird, Super-Typhoon and Ghost models all synthesized into one versatile compact shape.

The entry rocker is lower like that of the Ghost, allowing for early entry into waves and quick speed down the line. The rocker is surprisingly steep through the midsection of the board; the apex of the rocker peaking at dead center….much like that of the Supertypoon; this gives the board a nice swivelly almost ball-bearing like feel, immediately climbing it high and tight straight into the lippy power part of the wave.

The concaves are heavy throughout and increase in depth as the water runs through the bottom of the board…..this creates incredible speed, but with 100% hold no matter how hard you push it off the bottom or through turns. Has a nice progressive release out of the back of the wave when you want it to though.

The Apex is typically ridden the same height as the surfer, and a touch wider (1/8″ – 1/4″) than a good waves/ travel shortboard. If you’re favorite travel board/ “good waves” board is the blackbird or supertyphoon then you will love this model as it’s the ‘everyday’ performance version.
